The sage’s native range is the Mediterranean, from where it has spread and been domesticated more or less all over the world. The Mediterranean as a whole has been identified as its homeland, since it is no longer possible to determine whether sage originated in southern Europe, such as Italy, Greece, the countries of the former Yugoslavia, Albania or Asia Minor, because of the common history.
The taste and smell of sage is so unique that it is hard to miss. In a few words, the taste could be described as woody, earthy, piney, slightly peppery but fresh, with notes of eucalyptus and mint.
Its aroma brings a warmth and complexity that is hard to match in any other herb. It blends well with other herbs and is suitable for sweet and savoury dishes, although it is more common in savoury ones.
Sage leaves contain 1 to 2.5% essential oil, which is high in thujone (35 to 60%), bitter substances, chreslovins and flavonoids.
Sage pastilles are great! I felt relief in my throat after the first use. The lozenges have a pleasant taste and quickly help to reduce pain and inflammation.
I really like that these sages are natural and without artificial additives. The lozenges effectively relieve sore throats and help with dry coughs. They are a permanent fixture in my home pharmacy.
