Collagen is the main building block of our skin
Collagen is a protein that makes up about 30% of all proteins in the human body. It forms the basis of all connective tissues and is the building block of tendons, cartilage and bone. It is also the main component of the dermis, where it forms, together with elastin, the three-dimensional network in which skin cells and blood vessels are arranged. It has an unusual structure in which three peptide chains are twisted into a triple helix, which is responsible for its strength. Collagen is composed of arginine, glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. It is secreted by the main cells of the dermis called fibroblasts. It is first in a single-stranded form and then binds together in a triple-stranded form.
In addition to skin, it is also found in bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. In fact, it is essential for the structure and strength of tissues.
It gives structure, firmness and elasticity to the skin. When we’re young, it’s plentiful, so our skin is smooth and toned.
