What is a scar?

Scar formation is a natural process of wound healing and skin repair after injury, disease or surgery. During healing, collagen fibres are formed, and if too many collagen fibres are formed, scar tissue is formed.

The more damaged the skin, the longer the wound takes to heal and the more likely it is that the scar will remain permanently visible.

The type of scar depends on age, the site of the injury and genetic factors. In younger people, wounds heal more quickly, but scars are larger and rougher because the tissue regenerates too quickly and too abundantly. During the healing process, the scar changes colour, shape and appearance, which is why there are several types of scars.

What types of scars are there?

Hypertrophic scars – these scars are usually red, thickened and bulging, often with itching at the site of the scar. Later, they most often fade spontaneously, flatten out and become less visible.

Keloids – are firm fibrous formations with a characteristic irregular edge. They are often larger than the initial wound. Their colour is very red or dark compared to healthy skin. Sometimes they form only a few months after the skin has been injured. Their appearance may worsen during pregnancy.

Atrophic scars – are small round depressions on the skin. They occur when the spontaneous healing process is interrupted due to a lack of new connective tissue. They often occur as a result of acne or watery pox
