Cetraria islandica

What is Icelandic lichen?

Iceland moss is a thallus that grows in clear, mountainous areas of the Northern Hemisphere. It is traditionally used to relieve respiratory problems, digestion, and to strengthen the immune system.

Use in folk medicine

Icelandic lichen has been used in traditional medicine in Northern Europe for centuries. In the past, it was used to treat lung diseases, digestive problems, and as a nutritional supplement in times of scarcity .

What studies say about the benefits

1. Cough relief and mucous membrane protection - contains more than 50% mucilage (lichenin and isolichenin), which coat and soothe irritated mucous membranes in the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract. It is effective for dry, irritating coughs, bronchitis and whooping cough.

2. Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity - lichen acids, such as usnic acid, have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects. They inhibit the growth of bacteria, including Helicobacter pylori , and have immunostimulating effects.

3. Digestive support - bitter substances (cetrarin) stimulate appetite, regulate the secretion of stomach acid and bile, and relieve digestive disorders.

4. Strengthening the body - due to its content of vitamins (e.g. B12), iodine and iron, it helps with anemia, exhaustion and recovery from illness .
